Description A lovely array of hardy (nymphaea) waterlilies. The name waterlily (sometimes also spelled water lily or water-lily) is not a precise term and can be used for any of the approximately 70 species of the nymphaeaceae family, and the approximately 35 species and at least as many cultivars of the nymphaea genus. Some water-lilies are called lotus, eg, Egyptian Lotus, a beautiful blue flower, but are not true lotus, nelumbo, genus. Water lilies grow all over the world, in temperate and tropical climates. Those native to temperate zones are called hardy, and those from tropical zones tropical, or tender. Enough taxonomy, I hope, which can get quite involved.Waterlilies are not only decorative, the young leaves and flower buds can be cooked and eaten as vegetables. Some species produce tubers which can be popped, parched or ground into flour. In some areas they can become invasive weeds (So why not eat em?).So much could be said about these wonderful plants.Their name, itself, was inspired by the nymphs of Greek and Roman mythology. Their beauty inspired enchanting paintings by Monet and others, and theyve charmed me and so many others to try to capture their loveliness in photographs.
